While promoting Season 2 of ‘Poker Face,’ Rian Johnson shared with Business Insider that he hopes his upcoming ‘Knives Out’ installment, titled ‘Wake Up Dead Man,’ will be released in as many theaters as possible. It’s still uncertain whether Netflix will follow through on this request when the film is released later this year. Johnson’s comments came shortly after Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos sparked online debate by labeling the traditional movie theater model as “outdated.”

“Obviously I don’t [agree],” Johnson in response to Sarandos’ comment. “I love movies. I love going to see movies. But also, I have a feeling talking to Ted, it would be a different thing than one quote taken and kind of tossed at me in this context. So, I don’t want to phrase this as I’m having a proxy discussion with Ted right here.”

Sarandos original comments stated Netflix is “saving Hollywood” by securing an audience for content which would otherwise being obsolete in cinemas.

Sarandos described Netflix as “a very consumer-focused company. We deliver the programme to you in a way you want to watch it.”

Due to declining box office earnings each year, Sarandos added, “What is the consumer trying to tell us? — That they’d like to watch movies at home.”

In the interview with Business Insider, Rian Johnson said, “I think theatrical is not going anywhere,” eluding to the recent success of movies like ‘Sinners’ and ‘A Minecraft Movie.’ He continued: “We’ve seen if you put a movie people want to see in the theaters, they are going to show up for it, and that experience of being in a full house and having that experience is so important. It’s something that I love and I want more of in the world.”

Johnson added, “We’re in a period of transition. Folks grew up thinking, ‘I want to make movies on a gigantic screen and have strangers watch them [and to have them] play in the theater for two months and people cry and sold-out shows.’ … It’s an outdated concept.”

About his new Knives Out film, Johnson said, “I want this in as many theaters for as long as possible. We’re going to push for everything we can get in terms of theatrical, because I want as many people as possible to see it in that form.”

‘Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery’ is the third Knives Out film written and directed by Johnson, which feature Daniel Craig returning as detective Benoit Blanc. New cast members are suitable for a new mystery, which includes; Josh Brolin, Cailee Spaeny, Josh O’Connor, Glenn Close, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Daryl McCormack and Thomas Haden Church. The film is set to debut in the fall.
