Ron Howard is set to direct Alone at Dawn, a new drama from Amazon MGM Studios starring Adam Driver and Anne Hathaway. The film, which Amazon will release theatrically, continues Howard’s tradition of bringing extraordinary real-life stories to the screen.

The project falls under Amazon MGM’s recently renewed first-look deal with Brian Grazer and Howard’s Imagine Entertainment. It is produced by Imagine Entertainment, The Hideaway Entertainment, Thruline Entertainment, Kristy Grisham, William Connor, and Patrick Newall. Michael Russell Gunn, who wrote the screenplay, will also executive produce. Erin Cressida Wilson and Amy Herzog contributed script revisions.

Based on Dan Schilling and Lori Longfritz’s bestselling book, Alone at Dawn tells the story of Air Force Combat Controller John Chapman. Years after Chapman sacrificed his life to save fellow soldiers, an intelligence officer fights to have his heroism recognized — an effort that ultimately leads to Chapman receiving the Medal of Honor. Schilling, a former Combat Control Technician like Chapman, serves as a military consultant. Longfritz is Chapman’s sister.

The project has had a notable journey to the screen. Thruline Entertainment first brought the manuscript to The Hideaway Entertainment, which won the film rights in a competitive bidding war prior to the book becoming a New York Times bestseller. Gunn was hired to adapt the screenplay, and The Hideaway later partnered with Imagine Entertainment. Impressed by the story, Howard joined as director, and Amazon MGM came on board, bringing Wilson in for further rewrites.

Casting began with the search for the film’s central figure. Driver — an Oscar-nominated actor and former Marine — signed on earlier this year, drawn by the story’s authenticity. Hathaway joined more recently after reading the script and meeting with Howard and the producers.

Howard has a long history of turning true events into acclaimed films, including Apollo 13 and A Beautiful Mind, which won Best Picture and earned him the Oscar for Best Director. His most recent Amazon project, Thirteen Lives, chronicled the 2018 Thai cave rescue.

Hathaway is currently filming The Devil Wears Prada 2 and recently wrapped Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. Her recent credits include Mother’s Instinct, The Idea of You, She Came to Me, Armageddon Time, and Eileen. Upcoming projects include David Lowery’s Mother Mary, Verity, and Flowervale Street, scheduled for release in 2026. She will also reprise her role as Mia Thermopolis in the third Princess Diaries installment.

Driver’s upcoming projects include Jim Jarmusch’s Father Mother Sister Brother and James Gray’s Paper Tiger. He has received Academy Award nominations for Marriage Story and BlacKkKlansman. His filmography features titles such as Megalopolis, Ferrari, House of Gucci, The Last Duel, White Noise, Annette, Paterson, Logan Lucky, Silence, and the Star Wars sequel trilogy, in which he portrayed Kylo Ren.
