The Directors Guild of America (DGA) has elected filmmaker Christopher Nolan as its new president at the union’s Biennial National Convention, held on Saturday.

Nolan, the two-time Oscar-winning director of ‘Oppenheimer,’ takes over from Lesli Linka Glatter. His appointment comes alongside a newly elected slate of officers and members of the DGA’s National Board of Directors, chosen by 167 delegates representing the union’s 19,500 members.

The election also saw Laura Belsey named National Vice President, Paris Barclay re-elected as Secretary-Treasurer, Todd Holland chosen as First Vice President, Ron Howard as Second Vice President, Gina Prince-Bythewood as Third Vice President, Seith Mann as Fourth Vice President, Millicent Shelton as Fifth Vice President, Lily Olszewski as Sixth Vice President, and Joyce Thomas as Assistant Secretary-Treasurer.

Accepting the role, Nolan described it as “one of the greatest honors of my career,” adding:

“Our industry is experiencing tremendous change, and I thank the Guild’s membership for entrusting me with this responsibility. I also want to thank President Glatter for her leadership over the past four years. I look forward to collaborating with her and the newly elected Board to achieve important creative and economic protections for our members.”

The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) issued its own message following the election, stating: “The AMPTP congratulates Christopher Nolan on his election as President of the Directors Guild of America. We look forward to partnering with President Nolan to address the issues most important to DGA members while ensuring our member companies remain competitive in a rapidly changing industry.”

Nolan has been a DGA member since 2001 and has served on both the National Board and the Western Directors Council since 2015. He also chairs the Guild’s Theatrical Creative Rights Committee as well as its Artificial Intelligence Committee.
