A slate of high-profile Hollywood talent will join South Korean auteur Bong Joon Ho on the jury of this year’s Marrakech International Film Festival, organizers announced Wednesday.
Bong, the Oscar-winning director of ‘Parasite,’ will preside over an eight-member panel representing four continents. Among those serving alongside him are American actress Jenna Ortega, whose recent credits include ‘Wednesday’ and ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,’ and British-Argentinian star Anya Taylor-Joy of ‘Dune: Part Two,’ ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,’ and ‘The Queen’s Gambit.’ Writer-director Celine Song, acclaimed for ‘Past Lives’ and ‘Materialists,’ also joins the jury.
The 22nd edition’s lineup of jurors further includes Brazilian filmmaker Karim Aïnouz, known internationally for ‘The Invisible Life of Eurídice Gusmão’; Moroccan director Hakim Belabbes, a leading voice in intimate, memory-driven cinema; and French Palme d’Or winner Julia Ducournau, recognized for ‘Titane.’ Iranian actor and filmmaker Payman Maadi, who broke out in Asghar Farhadi’s ‘A Separation,’ completes the group.
The festival runs Nov. 28–Dec. 6 in Morocco, with awards to be presented at the closing ceremony on Dec. 6.
This year’s program features several major awards contenders. Gus Van Sant’s ‘Dead Man’s Wire,’ starring Bill Skarsgård, will open the festival, followed by screenings of Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein’ and Chloé Zhao’s ‘Hamnet.’
Fourteen titles submitted for the Academy Award for best international feature are included in the selection. Among them: the U.K.’s ‘My Father’s Shadow,’ Palestine’s ‘Palestine 36,’ Iraq’s ‘The President’s Cake,’ and Tunisia’s ‘The Voice of Hind Rajab,’ produced in part by Brad Pitt and Joaquin Phoenix.
