Letterboxd is set to introduce an in-app movie rental service, expanding the capabilities of the film-focused social platform.

The company announced on November 19 that it will launch its own VOD (Video on Demand) service in “early December,” allowing users to rent individual titles directly through the app. The move positions Letterboxd as an alternative to subscription-based streaming platforms such as Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video.

In a statement published on its website, Letterboxd emphasised that the service will not operate on a subscription model: “This isn’t a subscription service! No lock-in, no paywall. Just rent the films you want, whenever you want, and join the conversation with our community logging, reviewing and adding them to lists.”

The forthcoming Letterboxd Video Store will feature a range of offerings, including “festival standouts that are yet to be distributed,” “long-watchlisted titles finally made available,” “restorations and rediscoveries worth celebrating,” and “limited-time drops of sneak peeks and unreleased gems (only here for a short time).”

Availability and pricing will vary by region, and certain titles will only appear for a limited period. Users can also nominate films for inclusion by creating a Letterboxd list and tagging it with #video-store-recs.

The service will be accessible across multiple platforms, including the web, iOS, Android, Apple TV, Android TV, Chromecast and AirPlay.
