A24 has officially greenlit the sci-fi horror film ‘The Backrooms,’ directed by 19-year-old Kane Parsons, marking him as the youngest filmmaker to ever helm a project for the studio.
Starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, the film is shrouded in secrecy, though it draws from Parsons’ viral YouTube horror series of the same name. The anthological series, which launched in 2022, has accumulated over 190 million views. Filming is scheduled to begin this summer.
The project is being co-financed by A24 and Chernin Entertainment, a division of the North Road Company. Production partners include Atomic Monster, Chernin Entertainment, and 21 Laps Entertainment. Producers include Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen, and Dan Levine for 21 Laps; Chris Ferguson for Oddfellows Pictures; and James Wan and Michael Clear for Atomic Monster. Judson Scott will serve as executive producer with Alayna Glasthal overseeing on behalf of Atomic Monster. Chris White, who introduced the project to Atomic Monster, is also executive producing. Additional producing support comes from Roberto Patino (DMZ).
Ejiofor, an Academy Award nominee for ‘12 Years a Slave,’ has recently appeared in ‘The Life of Chuck,’ ‘Venom: The Last Dance,’ ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,’ and ‘Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy.’
Reinsve, acclaimed for her breakout role in Joachim Trier’s ‘The Worst Person in the World,’ which earned two Oscar nominations, previously collaborated with A24 on ‘A Different Man’ alongside Sebastian Stan.
