Amazon’s ‘Tomb Raider’ Production Under Fire for Breaking UK Safety Rules

Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming ‘Tomb Raider’ series has been found to have breached UK health and safety regulations during production.
Britain’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE) determined that Project Temple Productions Ltd, the company established to produce the Sophie Turner-led series, violated the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 while filming at Shinfield Studios.
The violation related to the use of isocyanate paints, which can pose serious respiratory risks and are considered a leading cause of occupational asthma. According to the HSE, the production failed to ensure crew members underwent the necessary biological monitoring to confirm that adequate measures were being taken to limit exposure. The paints can produce an invisible airborne mist, requiring appropriate protective equipment and sufficient clearance time before workers safely re-enter an affected area.
Project Temple Productions was issued an improvement notice in April and subsequently addressed the concerns, complying with the required regulations within approximately a month. Such action against television productions is relatively unusual, with only four productions receiving similar notices from the HSE over the past four years.
The safety breach adds to an eventful production for the Prime Video adaptation. Filming began in January, but production was temporarily halted earlier this year after Turner suffered a minor injury. The shoot later resumed after a roughly two-week pause.
Turner stars as Lara Croft alongside Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Martin Bobb-Semple, Jack Bannon, John Heffernan, Bill Paterson, Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed, Celia Imrie and August Wittgenstein. ‘Fleabag’ creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge serves as creator, writer, executive producer and co-showrunner alongside Chad Hodge, with Jonathan Van Tulleken directing and executive producing.
