Director of recent Mission: Impossible franchise installments, Christopher McQuarrie (who recently helmed the juggernaut conclusion to the saga ‘The Final Reckoning’), recently discussed details about his unmade ‘Man of Steel’ sequel starring Henry Cavill.
McQuarrie responded to a question on the Happy Sad Confused podcast about the pitch he made for Superman. Though he gave away very little, the director did confirm that it was, “f*cking good.” He also spoke on the opening scene of his Superman movie and the impact it would’ve had on the entire story.
“The first five minutes of my Superman movie was…you remember Pixar’s Up? [It was] a sequence with no dialogue that covered that character — exactly what made Superman tick, and exactly what Superman was most afraid of, and why Superman made the choices that he made,” said McQuarrie.
Warner Bros. approached McQuarrie for Green Lantern, in which he says he “cracked it” — meaning he had a story. He went into further details about how his Green Lantern would not be invincible with the power of the ring, and how his interpretation of the character would be clashing with Superman in order to expand the universe.
Warner Bros. returned to McQuarrie a second time after Cavill briefly returned in ‘Black Adam.’ This plans were scrapped after James Gunn was hired to co-run DC Studios with Peter Safran. Cavill abruptly parted the role, leading to fan backlash, and McQuarrie’s Superman film was shelved.
Gunn rebooted DC films starting with his own Superman movie (in which he wrote and directed), set to release on July 11, 2025.
“It would have been epic. The scale of the movie would have been absolutely extraordinary,” McQuarrie said about his scrapped DCEU Superman film.
