Looks like Jim Carrey might be trading in his mustache-twirling villainy in the ‘Sonic’ franchise for something a little more futuristic. The comedy icon is in talks to star in Warner Bros. Pictures’ upcoming live-action adaptation of ‘The Jetsons.’
The film has Colin Trevorrow (‘Jurassic World Dominion’) attached to direct, with Trevorrow and Joe Epstein currently in negotiations to write the script.
For anyone who didn’t grow up with it, ‘The Jetsons’ originally aired on ABC in 1962 as a quirky animated sitcom about life in the Space Age. The show followed George Jetson, his wife Jane, their two kids, robot housekeeper Rosie, and their lovable dog Astro. Created by animation legends William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, it imagined a shiny, high-tech future filled with flying cars and conveyor-belt breakfasts.
Hollywood has been trying to bring the Jetson family into live action for decades. Back in 2003, Adam Shankman was set to direct a feature version. Since then, big names like Robert Rodriguez and Conrad Vernon have circled the project at various stages. And in 2017, ABC even ordered a pilot for a live-action Jetsons TV series from Robert Zemeckis—but it never made it to air.
As for Carrey, he’s been busy the past few years playing Dr. Robotnik in Paramount’s ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ franchise, even pulling double duty in the third installment, which hit theaters last year. Outside of the ‘Sonic’ films, his last big-screen appearance was in the 2016 crime drama ‘Dark Crimes.’
Epstein recently served as showrunner and executive producer on HBO’s ‘The Idol,’ while Trevorrow last directed ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ in 2022.
