‘The Batman Part II’ may still be more than two years away from release, but signs point to it possibly being the last outing for Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight. Director Matt Reeves has hinted that a third installment isn’t guaranteed.
In a conversation with Josh Horowitz about Bruce Wayne’s on-screen journey, Reeves admitted that his original vision was for a trilogy. Still, he acknowledged that ‘The Batman 3’ isn’t a sure thing:
"The first story is so much about The Batman, and so I always wanted in the movies to make sure that, let's say we get to make three, and I have no idea [if we will get to make The Batman 3], but if we get to make three, I always wanted the movies to be focused on his character," Reeves explained.
Considering Reeves confirmed that the ‘Batman 2’ script is already complete — joking that he had “slipped the script to Rob” — you’d think he would know if the sequel is setting up another film. That uncertainty suggests the follow-up could mark the conclusion of Pattinson’s time behind the cowl.
The sequel has faced repeated delays and setbacks, stretching its production timeline. Meanwhile, James Gunn’s DCU Chapter One has already begun, with ‘Superman’ premiering this summer. That raises the question of whether Pattinson’s Batman could one day crossover into the main DC universe — much like the original X-Men joined the MCU in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’ Even so, Reeves has emphasized that his Batman films are intended as ‘Elseworlds’ stories, separate from the main continuity.
Plot details for ‘The Batman Part 2’ are still under wraps, but it has been confirmed that the story will take place after the events of ‘The Penguin’ spin-off series and introduce a new villain, whose identity remains a mystery. Filming is expected to begin in spring 2026, with the movie scheduled to hit theaters on October 1, 2027.
Until then, fans can revisit DC’s past releases and keep up with the growing slate of upcoming DC films and shows.
