Kathryn Bigelow’s cult action classic ‘Point Break’ is riding back onto the big screen this summer with a newly restored 4K presentation.

Resurgence Media Group, Saga Arts and Fathom Entertainment have announced that the 1991 thriller will return to participating theatres nationwide for two special screenings on August 16 and 19, celebrating the film’s 35th anniversary.

Starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze, the anniversary event will also feature an exclusive introduction from surfing icon Matt Archbold, who served as a surf double for Swayze and helped teach Reeves, Swayze, Anthony Kiedis and other cast members how to surf during production.

Archbold’s introduction will include behind-the-scenes stories from the making of the film, as well as reflections on the themes of freedom, risk and surfing that helped make Point Break an enduring cultural favourite.

“Few films have built a following as loyal as Point Break’s,” said Shannah Miller, Vice President of Marketing at Fathom Entertainment. “Thirty-five years after it first hit theatres, this newly restored 4K version gives that devoted following exactly what they’ve been asking for: Bodhi, Johnny Utah and those legendary surfing and skydiving sequences, back where they belong on the big screen.”

Directed by two-time Academy Award winner Kathryn Bigelow, ‘Point Break’ follows rookie FBI agent Johnny Utah, played by Reeves, as he goes undercover within the Los Angeles surfing community while investigating a group of bank robbers known as the Ex-Presidents.

The investigation leads Utah to charismatic surfer Bodhi, played by Swayze, whose thrill-seeking lifestyle and philosophy begin to challenge the agent’s loyalties.

The supporting cast includes Gary Busey, Lori Petty, John C. McGinley, James LeGros and Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis.

More than three decades after its original release, Point Break remains one of the defining action films of the 1990s, celebrated for its exhilarating surfing and skydiving sequences, memorable performances and distinctive blend of crime thriller and extreme-sports cinema.

Tickets for the Point Break 35th Anniversary screenings on August 16 and 19 are available now through Fathom Entertainment and participating theatre box offices.
