Nicolas Cage is reportedly in negotiations to lead the fifth season of HBO’s acclaimed crime anthology series ‘True Detective,’ which will once again feature Issa López as writer and showrunner, according to sources close to Deadline.

Earlier this year, Deadline confirmed that the new season will be set in New York, specifically around Jamaica Bay, as revealed by HBO’s Head of Drama Series and Film, Francesca Orsi.

If the deal closes, Cage would take on the role of Henry Logan, a New York detective at the center of the upcoming mystery. While Cage has been attached to the project for some time, it remains uncertain whether an agreement will be finalized. HBO has declined to comment on the negotiations. Notably, Jodie Foster also took considerable time to seal her deal for Season 4, titled ‘Night Country.’

Production for Season 5 is expected to begin in 2026, with a premiere planned for 2027 on HBO.

The first season of ‘True Detective’ starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, followed by Colin Farrell leading Season 2 and Mahershala Ali headlining Season 3.

The fourth installment, ‘True Detective: Night Country,’ featured Foster alongside Kali Reis as detectives investigating the chilling disappearance of eight men working at the Tsalal Arctic Research Station in Ennis, Alaska. The season explored the dark secrets buried beneath the eternal ice—and earned Foster an Emmy for her performance.
