Karen Gillan is officially joining the star-studded cast of ‘Highlander,’ Amazon MGM’s upcoming remake of the iconic 1980s cult classic.

The film, directed by Chad Stahelski, is set under the United Artists banner at Amazon MGM and is scheduled for a theatrical release. Production kicks off at the end of September.

Leading the ensemble is Henry Cavill, joined by Russell Crowe, Dave Bautista, and Marisa Abela. Gillan will portray Heather, the mortal wife and true love of Cavill’s character, Connor MacLeod.

The original ‘Highlander’ (1986) starred Christopher Lambert as MacLeod, a Scottish Highlander who discovers his immortality and faces off against other immortal warriors through the centuries. Guided by the swordsman Ramirez, played by Sean Connery, MacLeod ultimately confronts his rivals in a modern-day showdown with the iconic line: “There can be only one.”

In the remake, Cavill takes on the role of Connor MacLeod, with Crowe as Ramirez. Bautista will portray the fearsome warrior The Kurgen, while Abela also plays a key role.

The script is penned by Michael Finch, with production handled by Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt for United Artists, alongside Neal H. Moritz, Stahelski’s 87Eleven Entertainment, Josh Davis of Davis Panzer Productions, and Louise Rosner.

For Gillan, the project could mark her third major franchise. She’s best known as Nebula in Marvel Studios’ ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and ‘Avengers’ films, and as one of the leads in Sony’s ‘Jumanji’ series, which has a third installment in development. Currently, she stars in Neon’s ‘The Life of Chuck,’ adapted from a Stephen King novella, which recently premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, earning the People’s Choice Award.
