Russell Crowe will take on the role of mentor to Henry Cavill in the upcoming remake of ‘Highlander,’ stepping into a part reminiscent of the one originally played by Sean Connery in the 1986 classic.

The film is being directed by ‘John Wick’ filmmaker Chad Stahelski and features a script by Michael Finch, known for ‘John Wick: Chapter 4.’ Backed by Amazon MGM Studios and United Artists, now led by former Netflix executive Scott Stuber, the film is set for a theatrical release.

Crowe is known for his acclaimed roles in ‘Gladiator,’ ‘A Beautiful Mind,’ and ‘L.A. Confidential.’ More recently, he's embraced character roles in films like ‘Kraven the Hunter,’ and taken on projects with smaller budgets, including ‘The Pope’s Exorcist’ and ‘Sleeping Dogs.’

Before taking on the role of helming the lead role in the upcoming reboot, Henry Cavill has been involved in several high-profile projects. In 2024, he starred in ‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare,’ a World War II action-comedy directed by Guy Ritchie. Earlier that year, he also appeared in ‘Argylle,’ a globe-trotting spy thriller directed by Matthew Vaughn and featuring a star-studded cast. Cavill has recently wrapped filming on ‘In the Grey,’ another action-packed collaboration with Ritchie, co-starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Eiza González, slated for a 2025 release. Additionally, he is producing and set to star in Amazon’s ambitious ‘Warhammer 40,000’ film and series adaptations, following his pivotal role in securing the rights for the franchise. These projects highlight Cavill’s continued focus on genre-driven action and fantasy roles ahead of his ‘Highlander’ debut. The actor is most known for portraying Superman, first debuting in Zack Snyder’s 2013 sci-fi ‘Man Of Steel.’

The ‘Highlander’ remake is being produced by Stuber and Nick Nesbitt for United Artists, in collaboration with Neal H. Moritz, 87Eleven Entertainment, Stahelski’s production company, Josh Davis of Davis Panzer Productions, and Louise Rosner. United Artists has acquired full rights to the original 1986 film — which was previously developed by Lionsgate — with the possibility of expanding the franchise into a series. The original ‘Highlander,’ starring Christopher Lambert, followed a secret race of immortal warriors locked in an age-old battle.

The film is set to begin production this September, with an unconfirmed release date eyeing late 2027.
