Warner Bros. and New Line have rescheduled the release of ‘Mortal Kombat 2,’ shifting the film from October 24, 2025, to May 15, 2026.
The move positions the sequel away from a crowded late-October lineup, which includes 20th Century Studios’ ‘Deliver Me From Nowhere,’ a Bruce Springsteen biopic starring Jeremy Allen White, and Paramount’s adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s ‘Regretting You.’ Halloween weekend follows that frame, a period that historically sees lower box office turnout.
The mid-May slot has proven lucrative for the studio. Earlier this year, Warner Bros. and New Line released ‘Final Destination: Bloodlines’ in the same window, earning $51.6 million in its opening weekend and going on to gross $138.1 million domestically and $301 million worldwide. To date, New Line’s ‘Mortal Kombat’ films have collected $257.8 million globally.
Directed by Simon McQuoid, the sequel has tested positively in early research screenings. The cast features Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, alongside Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, Damon Herriman, Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada.
On its new date, ‘Mortal Kombat 2’ is set to open opposite Amazon MGM Studios’ ‘Is God Is’ and an untitled Neon release. Warner Bros. had already reserved the weekend on the release calendar.
The script is written by Jeremy Slater, based on the video game series created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. Producers include Todd Garner, James Wan, Toby Emmerich, E. Bennett Walsh, and McQuoid. Executive producers are Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Slater, and Lawrence Kasanoff.
The film follows Earthrealm’s champions—now joined by Johnny Cage—as they face Shao Kahn in a battle for the survival of Earth.
