Sony Pictures has entered a three-year partnership with Artists Equity, the production company founded by Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and Gerry Cardinale of RedBird Capital. Under the new agreement, Sony will distribute Artists Equity’s theatrical films worldwide, finance the productions, and manage all ancillary markets. Artists Equity will retain the option to co-finance specific projects.
Tom Rothman, chairman-CEO of Sony Pictures’ Motion Picture Group said, “Now that Ben and Matt and their team have set their sights firmly on the high bar of the theatrical market, Sony is lucky as hell to be partnering with them. We look forward to making a bunch of hit films together.”
Despite this exclusive theatrical deal, Artists Equity will continue to produce and develop projects for streaming platforms. Their upcoming slate includes ‘RIP,’ an action film starring Affleck and Damon, and ‘Animals,’ a thriller directed by Affleck — both set to debut on Netflix.
The company recently released ‘The Accountant 2’ with Amazon, which grossed $102 million at the global box office. Other titles from Artists Equity include Doug Liman’s ‘The Instigators’ for Apple TV+ and Bill Condon’s musical ‘The Kiss of the Spider Woman,’ scheduled for theatrical release on October 10 through Lionsgate.
“It’s an honor to make films for the magical dark room where we come together with strangers to project our innermost secrets onto a screen, surrendering to a story together, agreeing to share the same flickering dream,’ Affleck said. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to bring movies to a global audience, with the entire expert Sony team.”
