Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema announced on Thursday that ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,’ directed by Andy Serkis, will debut in theaters on December 17, 2027.
Currently, the film holds the end-of-year release date without competition, though that is expected to change as other studios finalize their schedules.
The Oscar-winning trio behind ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Hobbit’ trilogies — Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens — are returning to produce two new Middle-earth films for New Line, a Warner Bros. division. Producer Zane Weiner will also join the team.
Serkis will not only direct ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ but will reprise his iconic role as Gollum. The screenplay is being written by Walsh and Boyens, along with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou. The director for the second planned film has not yet been revealed.
