The team behind Sam Mendes’ ambitious quartet of Beatles biopics has been revealed, with a trio of acclaimed screenwriters attached to pen the scripts.
Jez Butterworth, a Tony Award winner known for ‘Ford v Ferrari’ and ‘Spectre,’ Oscar-winning screenwriter Peter Straughan known for ‘Conclave’ and ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,’ and BAFTA and Tony Award winner Jack Thorne known for ‘Adolescence’ and ‘Enola Holmes’ will write the screenplays for the four theatrical releases. The films are a collaboration between Sony Pictures and Neal Street Productions.
Apple Corps Ltd. and the surviving members and estates of The Beatles — John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr — have granted full rights to their life stories and music for this scripted film project.
Directed and conceived by Mendes, each film will focus on a different member of the legendary band, offering individual perspectives that interweave into a collective narrative of The Beatles’ journey.
Casting for the project includes Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison.
Sony Pictures is set to finance and distribute all four films globally, with full theatrical runs planned for April 2028. Titled ‘The Beatles - A Four-Film Cinematic Event,’ the series is being produced by Neal Street Productions in partnership with Apple Corps for Sony Pictures.
Mendes will also produce the films along with his Neal Street partners Pippa Harris and Julie Pastor. Alexandra Derbyshire (Wonka) joins as a producer as well.
Butterworth’s recent film credits include ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,’ ‘Black Mass,’ and ‘Edge of Tomorrow.’ He also earned accolades as a playwright, winning a Tony for ‘The Ferryman’ and receiving multiple nominations for his latest play ‘The Hills of California,’ both directed by Mendes.
Straughan recently won an Oscar for ‘Conclave,’ directed by Edward Berger. His past work includes the BAFTA-winning screenplay for ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,’ co-written with his late wife Bridget O’Connor. Other projects include ‘Frank,’ ‘Our Brand is Crisis,’ and the acclaimed adaptation of ‘Wolf Hall’ and its sequel ‘The Mirror and the Light.’
Thorne’s credits span film, television, and theater. He co-created the widely praised series ‘Adolescence,’ and has written screenplays for ‘The Swimmers,’ ‘The Aeronauts,’ and both ‘Enola Holmes’ films. His TV projects include ‘His Dark Materials,’ ‘Help,’ ‘Best Interests,’ and ‘Toxic Town.’ In theater, he is best known for ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,’ as well as ‘The Motive’ and ‘the Cue,’ also directed by Mendes.
‘The Beatles’ is expected to release sometime in April 2028.
