Charlie Plummer, Stephen Graham, Toni Collette, Isabela Merced, Maisy Stella, and Anthony Hopkins have signed on to star in ‘Ibelin,’ a feature film inspired by the true story of Norwegian gamer Mats Steen and the online persona he created in World of Warcraft. Steen’s life and digital legacy were previously the focus of Benjamin Ree’s Emmy-nominated documentary ‘The Remarkable Life of Ibelin.’
Academy Award–nominated filmmaker Morten Tyldum (‘The Imitation Game’) is set to direct. The screenplay was originally written by BAFTA nominee Ilaria Bernardini (‘Citadel: Diana’) and is currently undergoing revisions by Oscar nominee Hossein Amini (‘Drive’). The film draws from Steen’s blog, Musings of Life, where he chronicled his experience living with a progressive muscular disorder and the deep friendships he formed in the virtual world under the name “Ibelin.”
Ibelin reunites Vendôme Pictures and Pathé, partners behind the Academy Award–winning film ‘CODA.’ The project will be produced by Philippe Rousselet and Fabrice Gianfermi for Vendôme, with Jérôme Seydoux producing for Pathé, and Tyldum producing alongside Guri Neby for Neby-Tyldum AS. Financing is being jointly provided by Vendôme and Pathé. Sarah Finn (‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’) is on board as both casting director and executive producer.
