Ben Stiller has officially confirmed his long-rumored documentary project about the New York Knicks. The actor and director announced the news during an appearance on Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart’s Roommates podcast.
“I’m really excited to announce that we are making a documentary about the New York Knicks for HBO with A24,” Stiller said.
He added that the production has the full cooperation of the NBA and MSG, a key detail for a project expected to rely heavily on behind-the-scenes access.
That access point was underscored by the setting of the announcement: Stiller revealed the news while seated alongside Finals MVP Jalen Brunson and fellow champion Josh Hart. The implication was clear — access to the team and its key figures should not be a problem.
While many fans had assumed the documentary would focus primarily on the Knicks’ championship run, Stiller said the series will take a broader view. It will cover “all eras of the Knicks,” including the current team’s title-winning season.
The multi-part event series, directed by Stiller, is expected to chronicle the franchise’s history from the ’90s to the improbable, record-breaking run that finally returned a championship to New York.
Stiller also confirmed the project began only before the playoff run and that production is expected to continue over the next year.
The series could arrive with significant built-in interest. If this year’s NBA Finals ratings are any guide, a well-executed Knicks documentary may draw a sizable audience. Saturday’s Game 5 averaged 24.5 million viewers across ABC and ESPN, according to Nielsen Big Data + Panel, making it the most-watched NBA Finals game since 1998, when Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls captured their sixth championship in eight seasons.
