Grammy-winning singer Billie Eilish is reportedly in discussions to make her feature film acting debut in an adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s 1963 novel ‘The Bell Jar,’ directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Sarah Polley. Polley, who won an Academy Award for writing the screenplay for ‘Women Talking’ (2022), is currently working on the script for the new adaptation.
The project has been acquired by Focus Features and is being produced by Plan B Entertainment and StudioCanal. Producer Joy Gorman Wettels, known for her work on ‘Little House on the Prairie’ and ‘13 Reasons Why,’ is attached to the film. Through her company Joy Coalition, Gorman Wettels originally developed the project, pairing Polley and Eilish before bringing Plan B and StudioCanal on board.
‘The Bell Jar,’ a bestselling novel, follows the mental health struggles of college student Esther Greenwood as she takes a position at a magazine.
Eilish, a 10-time Grammy winner, has also earned two Academy Awards for Best Original Song. She most recently won for “What Was I Made For?” from the 2023 film ‘Barbie,’ after previously winning for “No Time to Die” from the 2021 James Bond film of the same name. Her latest album, Hit Me Hard and Soft (2024), includes the popular singles “Birds of a Feather” and “Wildflower.”
While primarily known for music, Eilish has explored acting before. She appeared in the Prime Video series ‘Swarm’ and hosted an episode of ‘Saturday Night Live’ in 2021.
Eilish is represented by WME and Sandbox Entertainment. Polley is represented by WME, GGA, and Circle Management, while Gorman Wettels is represented by Nina Shaw at Del Shaw.
