September won’t see the same box office levels as 2024, but horror fans still have a big film on the horizon: ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ — the final ‘Conjuring’ movie. Early tracking puts the September 5 opener at $35M–$40M.

Warner Bros. has owned the post–Labor Day horror slot since ‘It: Chapter One’ scared up $123.4M in 2017—the biggest September opening ever. The next year, ‘The Nun’ claimed the ‘Conjuring’ franchise record with $53.8M.

Director Michael Chaves (‘The Nun II,’ ‘The Devil Made Me Do It,’ ‘La Llorona’) returns to send Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga) on one last supernatural showdown.

‘The Nun II’ released during the 2023 strikes and opened to $32.6M and closed at $83.2M. ‘The Devil Made Me Do It,’ hurt by Warner’s pandemic HBO Max strategy, started with $24.1M and finished at $65.6M. This time, ‘Last Rites’ is getting a full theatrical push—no streaming split.

Interest is strong across women under 25, women over 25, and men under 25—tracking ahead of ‘Alien: Romulus’ ($42M) and ‘Insidious: The Red Door’ ($33M) at the same point.
