James Gunn revealed to ScreenRant that 'Superman’ is set to arrive early on digital platforms (including Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV+) so audiences can watch it before ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 premieres on HBO Max on August 21.

The film marks the official launch of Gunn’s new DC Universe, with ‘Peacemaker’ serving as its next installment. Gunn has repeatedly noted in interviews that the events of ‘Superman’ directly impact the second season of the John Cena–led series. Some characters introduced in ‘Superman,’ including Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) and Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), will also appear in ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2.

‘Superman’ will be available on PVOD starting Friday, August 15—just over a month after its theatrical debut on July 11 from Warner Bros. and DC Studios. The decision has sparked mixed reactions among fans, especially since the film has been a box office success, grossing $334 million domestically and approaching $600 million worldwide.

When ScreenRant’s Andy Behbakht expressed disappointment at the short theatrical window, Gunn agreed, saying, “Me too,” before explaining the reasoning behind the move.

“Well, it’s very complicated, but the truth is it is because of ‘Peacemaker,'” Gunn said. “I originally thought ‘Peacemaker’ was going to be coming out next month. There was a lot of things that are beyond our control, so that ‘Peacemaker’ is coming out now, and, at the end of the day, I wanted everyone to be able to see ‘Superman’ that wanted to, even those people who couldn’t get to a theater before ‘Peacemaker.’ And that’s really the reason for it.”

Gunn confirmed that ‘Superman’ will remain in theaters as digital platforms release the movie.
