Henry Cavill has reportedly sustained an injury during pre-production training for Amazon MGM Studios and United Artists’ upcoming ‘Highlander’ reboot. Because of the setback, filming on the Chad Stahelski–directed revival of the cult classic is now expected to be pushed back, with cameras unlikely to roll until early next year.
The screenplay, written by Michael Finch, features a cast that includes Russell Crowe, Marisa Abela, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Dave Bautista, and Max Zhang.
Producing the film are UA’s Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt, Neal H. Moritz, Stahelski’s 87Eleven Entertainment, Josh Davis of Davis Panzer Productions, and Louise Rosner.
United Artists obtained the full rights to the 1986 original, with the option to also explore a new series. The project was initially set up at Lionsgate before moving forward under UA.
The first ‘Highlander’ film, released in 1986, starred Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery. It told the story of an age-old conflict among immortals, blending historic flashbacks with a modern-day showdown. Though it underperformed at the box office, it became a cult phenomenon on home video, spawning sequels, a fan-favorite television series, and a loyal following that has lasted for decades. Directed by Russell Mulcahy and produced by Peter S. Davis and William N. Panzer, the film cemented its place as a staple of 1980s pop culture.
