Simu Liu recently floated a casting idea for the next Wonder Woman, suggesting his ‘The Copenhagen Test’ co-star Melissa Barrera could be a strong fit for the iconic DC role.

Speaking with JoBlo, Liu praised Barrera’s commitment to stunt work, noting that her intensity and discipline stood out during training. He said she consistently pushed herself physically, adding that there were moments when her performance felt “Wonder Woman-esque.” Liu even joked that if anyone influential—such as DC Studios co-chair James Gunn—happened to hear the interview, he wanted the idea out in the open.

Liu’s comments come as DC continues to develop a new era for the Amazonian hero. In June 2025, Gunn confirmed that a new Wonder Woman film was actively in development, saying a script was “being written right now.” The movie is planned alongside an HBO series set on Themyscira, Wonder Woman’s homeland, which Gunn described as progressing slowly but steadily.

The screenplay for the upcoming Wonder Woman film is being written by Ana Nogueira, who was hired in July 2025. Nogueira is also penning a live-action Teen Titans movie for DC, further cementing her role in shaping the studio’s future slate.

Gunn has also publicly acknowledged other potential casting possibilities. In a separate interview with Extra, he mentioned Adria Arjona—known for ‘Hit Man’ and ‘Andor’—as an actress he could envision in the role. Gunn clarified that online speculation erupted after he followed Arjona on Instagram, though he emphasized that the social media interaction didn’t signal an official casting decision.

The character was most recently portrayed by Gal Gadot, who introduced Wonder Woman to the modern cinematic era. Gadot debuted as the hero in ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ and went on to star in DC hit ‘Wonder Woman,’ followed by ‘Justice League,’ and ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ (later appearing in the director’s cut of Justice League titled ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’). Gadot also made brief, uncredited appearances as the character in ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ and a final appearance as Wonder Woman in ‘The Flash.’

With a new script underway and casting conversations beginning to surface, DC’s next take on Wonder Woman is gradually coming into focus—even if the final choice remains far from decided.
