Marvel’s ‘Thunderbolts*’ remained in control of a subdued weekend at the North American box office, bringing in $33.1 million and pushing its 10-day domestic total to $128.5 million. Globally, the film has now amassed $272.2 million.
The star-studded Marvel release, headlined by Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan, dropped just 55% from its opening weekend. That’s a better-than-average hold for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), where films typically decline around 57% in their second weekend. By comparison, ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ saw a much steeper drop of over 65% earlier this year.
Positive reviews and strong audience reactions are fueling ‘Thunderbolts*’ momentum, with buzz continuing to grow. Adding to the excitement, Disney’s marketing team recently revealed that the asterisk in the title nods to an unofficial subtitle: ‘The New Avengers,’ hinting at the characters’ return in next year’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’
Directed by Jake Schreier, the movie follows a team of misfit antiheroes and lesser-known Marvel characters discovering their heroic potential as a unit. Alongside Pugh’s Yelena Belova and Stan’s Bucky Barnes, the cast includes Wyatt Russell (John Walker), David Harbour (Red Guardian), Lewis Pullman (Bob), Hannah John-Kamen (Ghost), Olga Kurylenko (Taskmaster), and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Valentina Allegra de Fontaine).
With no major new releases, existing titles dominated the weekend.
Warner Bros. celebrated major milestones as Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’ crossed $200 million domestically, reaching $283.3 million globally. In its fourth weekend, the vampire thriller starring Michael B. Jordan added $21.1 million, taking second place and bringing its North American haul to $214.9 million. This marks another win for Coogler, the visionary behind the ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Creed’ franchises, with Jordan having starred in all five of his films.
Meanwhile, ‘A Minecraft Movie’ continued to soar, claiming third place in its sixth weekend. The film earned $8 million for a domestic total of $409 million and $909.6 million worldwide, making it the second-highest-grossing video game adaptation ever, trailing only ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ (unadjusted for inflation).
Amazon MGM Studios’ ‘The Accountant 2’ held on to fourth place with \$6.1 million, bringing its domestic earnings to a solid \$50.9 million after four weeks.
