Fresh off her Oscar win for ‘Anora,’ Mikey Madison has landed her next major role, signing on to star in ‘Reptilia,’ alongside Kirsten Dunst. The indie feature is helmed by filmmaker Alejandro Landes Echavarría.

Based on a screenplay by Landes Echavarría and Duke Merriman, ‘Reptilia’ follows the story of a dental hygienist who becomes entangled in Florida’s shadowy exotic animal trade after being lured by a mysterious mermaid.

Producers of the project include including Pastel (‘Moonlight’), Imperative Entertainment (‘Killers of the Flower Moon’), and international outfit AF Films. Landes Echavarría will also produce under his A STELA CINE banner.

The project is being financed by Black Bear and will be introduced to international buyers at the Cannes Film Market. Sales will be handled by Charades, UTA Independent Film Group, and 30West.

Madison, previously seen in ‘Scream 5’ and Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,’ gained widespread acclaim for her breakout role in ‘Anora.’ The film earned five Academy Awards, including Best Actress for Madison, as well as the Palme d’Or at Cannes. Her performance also won her the BAFTA for Best Leading Actress and the Independent Spirit Award for Best Lead Performance. She received nominations from the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and Critics Choice Awards.

Landes Echavarría, known for his acclaimed film ‘Monos,’ made a mark at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival where the movie received the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award. The film later won Best Film at the BFI London Film Festival and was Colombia’s official submission for Best International Feature at the 92nd Academy Awards.

Dunst, most recently seen in A24’s 2023 thriller ‘Civil War,’ will next appear in Derek Cianfrance’s ‘Roofman’ opposite Channing Tatum and in Ruben Östlund’s upcoming A24 project ‘The Entertainment System Is Down.’

Production is slated to begin in the fall.
