The now iconic paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren will return in a new film in the ‘Conjuring’ franchise.
Warner Bros. and New Line are developing a prequel to the popular horror series, with short film director Rodrigue Huart in talks to helm the project. Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg, franchise veterans who co-wrote ‘The Nun II’ (2023) and this September’s ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites,’ are set to write the screenplay. No official deals have been finalized yet.
Though ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ was marketed as the final chapter of the franchise, its massive success at the global box office ($487 million worldwide) quickly changed those plans.
It remains uncertain whether Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson will reprise their roles as the Warrens, since ‘Last Rites’ concluded their storyline. The upcoming film is expected to serve as an origin story, exploring the couple’s early years as paranormal investigators. This likely means new actors will step into the iconic roles, marking a fresh start for the ‘Conjuring’ universe.
In addition to the new film, the supernatural saga is expanding to television. HBO is currently developing a ‘Conjuring’ series that will continue the narrative established in the films. While plot details remain secret, Nancy Won has been hired as writer, executive producer, and showrunner.
Spanning nine movies, the ‘Conjuring’ universe has become the highest-grossing horror franchise of all time, with a combined total of $2.7 billion worldwide. Known for their modest budgets and huge profits, the films were created by James Wan and produced throughout by Peter Safran.
