Warner Bros. continues to dominate the weekend box office with original releases, scoring its eleventh No. 1 title of 2025 thanks to ‘Weapons.’ The film is projected to earn $42.5 million domestically and $70 million worldwide. With an A- CinemaScore, it’s expected to post a strong multiple, similar to ‘Sinners’ and ‘Get Out.’ This marks director Zach Cregger’s biggest career opening to date.
Meanwhile, Disney’s ‘Freakier Friday’ debuted with $29 million domestically and $45 million worldwide. With a $45 million production budget, it’s a solid start for the revived property starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis.
‘Weapons’ sold 2.8 million tickets compared to ‘Freakier Friday’’s 2.2 million. Premium ticket sales leaned heavily toward Cregger’s film (61%) over the Lohan-Curtis comedy (27%).
With ‘Weapons’ continuing Warner Bros.’ recent winning streak under the studio’s New Line banner, the studio hit a rocky start to 2025 that included flops like ‘Mickey 17’ and ‘The Alto Knights.’ Momentum returned in the spring with ‘Sinners’ and ‘A Minecraft Movie,’ and brought the summer’s biggest superhero release: ‘Superman.’
With a $38 million budget, ‘Weapons’ marks writer-director Zach Cregger’s follow-up to his 2022 breakout ‘Barbarian,’ which earned $45.4 million for 20th Century Studios. His latest film stars Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan. Its strong performance is expected to elevate Cregger’s profile even further—he’s already signed on to helm a reboot of ‘Resident Evil.’
Marvel’s ‘Fantastic Four: The First Steps’ (last weekend’s box office leader) slipped to third place, taking in $15.5 million in its third weekend. The film opened with an impressive $117.6 million debut but has seen steep declines since—dropping more than 67% in its second weekend and another 60% this past weekend. So far, the superhero adventure has earned $230 million domestically, but it’s now on track to finish below ‘Superman,’ DC Films’ latest comic book release.
