‘Weapons’ director Zach Cregger has revealed that he and Warner Bros. are in discussions about a prequel film focused on Aunt Gladys, the terrifying villainess portrayed by Amy Madigan.
“It is real and I’ve been talking to Warner Bros. about it,” Cregger said to Fangoria ahead of the film’s digital release. “There’s a story and I’m pretty excited about it.”
The filmmaker emphasized that conversations about the prequel began long before ‘Weapons’ proved itself at the box office. The horror hit earned nearly $150 million domestically and $263 million worldwide on a budget of under $40 million.
Last month, Deadline reported that New Line Cinema, a Warner Bros. Discovery subsidiary, had entered early talks about a prologue film. At the time, it was unclear how involved Cregger would be, since he is currently working on Sony Pictures’ ‘Resident Evil’ reboot and developing the sci-fi feature ‘Flood,’ for which he has already finished the script.
As for Amy Madigan, whose chilling performance as Aunt Gladys has captivated audiences, she remains open but cautious about reprising the role. I just had such a great time working with Zach and being inside that brain of his. That’s really the gift of how the movie came out. The other stuff has to do with all sorts of conversations that I would never be privy in and business things like that. But, you know, I love Gladys, so I’ll leave it at that.”
‘Weapons,’ Cregger’s follow-up to his breakout 2022 horror film ‘Barbarian,’ centers on the baffling disappearance of 17 third-graders at precisely 2:17 a.m. and the paranoia that grips their small community. Alongside Madigan, the film stars Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Benedict Wong, and Cary Christopher.
