Sony looks to continue its ‘Men in Black’ franchise, commissioning a new screenplay with Chris Bremner set to write the script. A director and cast have not yet been set.
The franchise began with director Barry Sonnenfeld’s 1997 adaptation of Lowell Cunningham’s Marvel Comics series, starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones as agents of a clandestine government unit tasked with policing extraterrestrial activity on Earth. The film became a global hit, earning more than $580 million following its July 2, 1997 release and spawning two sequels — ‘Men in Black II’ (2002) and ‘Men in Black 3’ (2012) — both featuring the original leads.
Sony rebooted the brand in 2019 with ‘Men in Black: International,’ led by Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson. Directed by F. Gary Gray, the film omitted Smith and Jones and fell short of box office and critical expectations.
Bremner’s recent credits include 2020’s ‘Bad Boys for Life’ and 2023’s ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die,’ the third and fourth entries in the action-comedy franchise starring Smith and Martin Lawrence. He also worked on ‘Fast and Loose,’ a Netflix action title currently in development with Smith attached.
