Universal Pictures’ upcoming ‘Miami Vice’ movie appears to have found its leading man.
Austin Butler is reportedly in talks to take on the role of James “Sonny” Crockett, the character made famous by Don Johnson in the original 1980s NBC series.
Michael B. Jordan is also in discussions to play Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, Crockett’s partner and fellow undercover detective — a role originally portrayed by Philip Michael Thomas.
The new film will be directed by Joseph Kosinski (‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ ‘Tron: Legacy’), based on a screenplay by Eric Warren Singer and Dan Gilroy. Kosinski will also produce the project alongside Dylan Clark, known for ‘The Batman.’
Inspired by the original show’s pilot and first season, the movie will delve into the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami, capturing the vibrant yet dangerous atmosphere that defined the era.
Universal has set a theatrical release date of August 6, 2027, with production expected to begin next year.
The original ‘Miami Vice’ series, created by Anthony Yerkovich, debuted in September 1984 and ran for five seasons. It became a defining pop culture phenomenon of the decade, celebrated for its pastel fashion, sockless style, and iconic soundtrack.
