‘Backrooms’ kept audiences hooked, bringing in $7.6 on Monday, giving the A24 horror hit the biggest June Monday ever for an R-rated horror film, beating the $4.3 million earned by ‘The Conjuring 2’ on June 13, 2016.

It’s the latest milestone for filmmaker Kane Parsons’ breakout feature, which opened to $81.4 million domestic and $118 million worldwide… both record-setting numbers for A24. After four days, ‘Backrooms’ stands at $89 million domestically.

It nearly claimed an even bigger crown, too. The film came within a hair of ‘World War Z’’s June horror Monday record of $7.67 million, set in 2013 by the PG-13 action-horror blockbuster.

Made for under $10 million, the Atomic Monster-Blumhouse, 21 Laps, Odd Fellow, and Chernin Entertainment production is expected to drop around 55% in weekend two, which would put it at $36 million-$37 million. That could be enough to beat Amazon MGM’s ‘Masters of the Universe,’ tracking at $25 million-$35 million, though Paramount/Miramax’s ‘Scary Movie’ reboot is still expected to lead the weekend with $35 million-$45 million.

Focus Features/Blumhouse’s ‘Obsession,’ directed by Curry Barker, took second Monday with $5.2 million, bringing its domestic total to $111 million and making it Focus Features’ biggest domestic release ever.
