Anna Kendrick is set to direct ‘The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo’ for Netflix.
The streamer announced Monday that Kendrick will helm the film adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s 2017 bestselling novel. Liz Tigelaar, creator, showrunner and executive producer of Little Fires Everywhere, is writing the screenplay, with current revisions by Francesca Sloane.
The film will be produced by Liza Chasin for 3Dot Productions and Brad Mendelsohn for Circle of Confusion. Reid and Margaret Chernin are executive producing.
Kendrick’s involvement marks the latest development for the long-awaited adaptation. The novel was previously being developed as a series at Freeform, with The L Word’s Ilene Chaiken and Jennifer Beals attached as executive producers. Kendrick made her feature directorial debut with ‘Woman of the Hour,’ which was released on Netflix in late 2024 after premiering at TIFF in 2023.
‘The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo’ follows Evelyn Hugo, a reclusive and legendary Hollywood star, who chooses unknown journalist Monique Grant to write her tell-all biography. The book is meant to recount Evelyn’s rise to fame during Hollywood’s golden age, as well as the truth behind her much-publicized personal life. For the first time, Evelyn opens up about her seven marriages, the secrets she has kept, who she really is away from the spotlight and why she selected Monique for her final confession.
Casting for the Netflix film has not yet been announced, but fans have long speculated about who could play the novel’s major characters. Jessica Chastain, Ana de Armas and Eiza González have frequently been mentioned among readers’ top choices.
Reid has sold more than 24 million books worldwide in 43 languages.
