Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated film ‘The Odyssey’ is making an unexpected move, with IMAX tickets for the film becoming available starting July 17, 2025 — exactly one year ahead of its scheduled release date. However, this early ticket access comes with a catch: only select showtimes at theaters equipped with IMAX 70mm projectors — Nolan’s format of choice — will be included. Tickets for other screenings and formats will go on sale much closer to the film’s release.
It’s rare for a studio to open ticket sales this far in advance, but the buzz surrounding Nolan’s follow-up to ‘Oppenheimer’ is already intense. His 2023 blockbuster not only grossed a staggering $975 million worldwide but also secured the Oscar for Best Picture, further cementing Nolan’s reputation as a powerhouse filmmaker.
Although ‘The Odyssey’ is still in production, Universal is already ramping up marketing efforts. A roughly one-minute teaser trailer debuted exclusively in theaters ahead of screenings of ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ and ‘Superman.’ The teaser, which has not yet been released online, reflects Nolan’s ongoing commitment to the theatrical experience.
A retelling of Homer’s ancient Greek epic, ‘The Odyssey’ stars Matt Damon as the legendary Odysseus, King of Ithaca, on his perilous voyage home after the Trojan War. The film features a star-studded cast including Tom Holland as Telemachus, Odysseus’ son, alongside Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal. Nolan once again teams up with Universal, the same studio behind ‘Oppenheimer.’ The film is set for release on July 17, 2026.
‘The Odyssey’ marks the first film to be shot entirely with IMAX cameras. Nolan has championed the IMAX format since using it for key scenes in ‘The Dark Knight’ (2008), and has continued to incorporate it in films like ‘Inception’ (2010), ‘Interstellar’ (2014), and ‘Tenet’ (2020), using the format to capture epic scale and visual depth.
‘Oppenheimer’ proved to be a major hit in IMAX, with the premium format accounting for 20% of its total box office revenue. Many moviegoers even traveled across state lines to view it in 70mm IMAX, with showings sold out for weeks. By releasing Imax tickets for ‘The Odyssey’ a full year in advance, Universal and IMAX appear to be preparing for similar — if not greater — demand for Nolan’s next cinematic spectacle.
