Paramount Pictures is expanding its video game adaptation slate with a live-action film based on 'Cyberpunk 2077', the hugely successful action RPG developed by CD Projekt Red. According to Deadline, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, best known for his work on the 'Transformers' franchise, is attached to produce the project alongside the Polish video game developer, which also holds the rights to the franchise.

Released in 2020, 'Cyberpunk 2077' takes place in Night City, a sprawling futuristic metropolis in California where powerful corporations dominate society and advanced cybernetic technology has become part of everyday life. The game's story follows V, a mercenary whose life is threatened after a mysterious biochip containing the digital consciousness of Johnny Silverhand becomes embedded in their body. As Silverhand's personality gradually begins to replace V's own, the pair must find a way to survive while confronting the powerful Arasaka Corporation, which exercises enormous influence over the city.

The franchise has become one of CD Projekt Red's biggest commercial successes, selling more than 40 million copies worldwide. Its acclaimed expansion, 'Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty', has also achieved impressive sales, surpassing 15 million copies. The game's enormous popularity and richly developed science-fiction setting provide Paramount with an established universe to explore on the big screen.

The project remains in the early stages of development, with no director, screenwriter, cast members or release date announced. It is also unclear whether the adaptation will follow the game's central storyline or introduce an entirely new narrative within the 'Cyberpunk' universe.

The announcement comes as Paramount continues to invest in major video game properties. The studio is already collaborating with Legendary Entertainment on a new 'Street Fighter' adaptation, scheduled for release on October 16, 2026. Paramount is also developing a film based on the hugely popular 'Call of Duty' franchise, with Peter Berg attached to direct and co-write the screenplay alongside Taylor Sheridan.

With Lorenzo di Bonaventura and CD Projekt Red involved, 'Cyberpunk 2077' becomes another major gaming property making the transition to Hollywood. Although specific creative details remain under wraps, the adaptation represents another step in Paramount's growing commitment to bringing established video game franchises to cinema.
