The team behind the upcoming British boxing drama ‘In the Shadows’ has secured a last-minute theatrical release after its original UK distributor, True Brit Entertainment, entered administration in late September.
Based on the extraordinary life of British-Somali boxer, model and UNICEF Ambassador Ramla Ali, the film is scheduled to make its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on October 9. Despite the unexpected setback, producers Lee Magiday and Madeleine Sanderson have secured additional financial backing, allowing the film to move forward with an independently managed UK cinema release.
The distribution crisis emerged in mid-September when the producers discovered that funding for the film's marketing and advertising campaign was no longer available. With its festival premiere approaching, Magiday and Sanderson turned to their executive producers for additional investment to keep the release on track.
Executive producers Richard Fearn, Anushka Shah and Natasha Mudhar stepped in with further financial support, ensuring the film would still reach audiences as originally intended.
The film is now set to open across more than 30 UK screens from October 30, beginning with a special screening and Q&A at London's Genesis Cinema, situated close to where much of the production was filmed.
The timing also coincides with a significant moment in Ali's sporting career. The boxer is scheduled to compete in a world title fight in the United States on November 8 before returning to the UK to participate in additional screenings and audience discussions.
Several industry figures have also contributed to securing the film's release. Will Clarke of Altitude Films, which is overseeing international sales, connected the producers with Ben Metcalf of Metis Films. The company will now manage the physical distribution of the film, while former True Brit executive Kate Neville-Towle takes responsibility for its marketing campaign.
Directed by Anthony Wonke and starring Top Boy actress Jasmine Jobson, ‘In the Shadows’ explores Ali's remarkable journey from refugee to pioneering professional boxer.
Growing up in London, Ali secretly pursued boxing without the knowledge of her strictly Muslim parents, overcoming cultural expectations and personal obstacles to become the first Somali-British professional boxing champion.
Her achievements would extend far beyond Britain. Ali became the first boxer to represent Somalia at the Olympic Games in Tokyo and participated in the first professional women's boxing match held in Saudi Arabia.
Alongside her sporting accomplishments, the film explores her relationship with Richard Moore, whom she met through boxing and who would later become her husband. Their relationship, including Moore's conversion to Islam, forms an important part of a story about love, identity and navigating racial and cultural differences.
For the producers, the challenges surrounding the film's release reflect the determination at the heart of Ali's story.
Magiday, whose previous credits include the Oscar-nominated ‘The Favourite,’ explained that the production itself had faced significant obstacles, including a lack of conventional industry support. Bringing the film to audiences has required the same perseverance that defined Ali's journey into professional boxing.
Sanderson also acknowledged the collective effort that made the theatrical release possible, highlighting the commitment of the financiers and industry professionals who rallied around the project when its future became uncertain.
Beyond its portrayal of sporting achievement, ‘In the Shadows’ examines the complexities of belonging, family expectations, faith and cultural acceptance. At its centre is a woman determined to pursue her ambitions while remaining connected to her identity and community.
With its UK theatrical release now secured, the film's journey from production to the big screen has become a story of resilience in its own right.
‘In the Shadows’ will premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on October 9 before arriving in UK cinemas on October 30.
