Jeremy Irons has joined the cast of ‘Highlander,’ Amazon MGM’s remake of the 1980s fantasy film. The actor, who has won an Oscar, Emmy and Tony, will play the head of The Watchers, a secret order that monitors immortals and considers them a threat to humanity.

Irons joins a cast led by Henry Cavill, with Russell Crowe, Marisa Abela, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Max Zhang and Drew McIntyre also on board.

Chad Stahelski is directing the film for Amazon MGM’s United Artists banner. Production, originally slated for fall 2024, was delayed after Cavill sustained an injury in pre-production and is now expected to begin in early 2026. The movie will be released theatrically.

Cavill is set to play Connor MacLeod, a Scottish Highlander who discovers he is immortal and trains under swordsman Ramirez (Crowe). The character battles other immortals across centuries until only one survives. Bautista will portray the main villain, The Kurgen. Gillan plays MacLeod’s mortal wife, Hounsou an African immortal, and Abela his modern-day romantic partner.

The script is by Michael Finch. Producers include Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt for United Artists, Neal H. Moritz, Stahelski’s 87Eleven Entertainment, Josh Davis of Davis Panzer Productions, and Louise Rosner.

Irons’ recent credits include Apple TV+’s ‘The Morning Show,’ HBO’s ‘Watchmen,’ and multiple DC films as Alfred Pennyworth, where he shared the screen in ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ with Henry Cavill. He will next reprise his role as a former CIA director in Amazon’s ‘The Beekeeper 2.’
