‘Superman’ Flies High But is Unlikely to Surpass ‘Man of Steel’ at the Global Box Office

James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ has already made history, soaring past Zack Snyder’s ‘Man of Steel’ on the U.S. charts. But when it comes to the worldwide box office, the new Kryptonian adventure still has some ground to cover.
As of mid-August 2025, ‘Superman’ has earned an estimated $596 million globally, lower than Snyder’s 2013 reboot, which closed its run with $670.1 million worldwide. That leaves Gunn’s film trailing by roughly $74 million, though having played in theaters for less time.
The domestic story, however, tells a different tale. ‘Superman’ has already overtaken ‘Man of Steel’s’ U.S. haul, flying past $291 million to become the highest-grossing solo Superman movie ever on home soil.
The challenge lies overseas. While ‘Man of Steel’ pulled in nearly $379 million internationally, Gunn’s ‘Superman’ has so far managed around $214 million abroad—a softer showing that’s keeping its global total below Snyder’s benchmark.
So will ‘Superman’ close the gap? With a deficit north of $70 million, the odds are steep. Unless the film shows exceptional staying power in theaters or finds new strength in untapped markets, Snyder’s ‘Man of Steel’ looks likely to retain its crown as the biggest Superman movie worldwide.
Still, Gunn’s Kryptonian reboot has already reshaped the narrative. It’s the first Superman film in over a decade to win back U.S. audiences at scale, and that momentum may prove more important in the long-run of the new DC Universe than the final dollar tally.
For now (financially), the Man of Tomorrow is still chasing the Man of Steel.
