Charlie Hunnam is returning to Netflix’s ‘Monster’ as the hit anthology series begins filming its fourth season in Los Angeles. The new installment follows the success of ‘Monster: The Ed Gein Story,’ which continues to hold the top spot on Netflix’s streaming charts.

Created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, the Emmy-winning true-crime series will turn its attention to Lizzie Borden, marking the first time the anthology has centered on a female “monster.” Rising star Ella Beatty (‘Feud: Capote vs. The Swans,’ ‘If I Had Legs I’d Kick You’) has been cast in the lead role.

Borden gained notoriety in 1892 after being accused of murdering her father and stepmother with an axe in Fall River, Massachusetts. She was later acquitted, and her trial has inspired numerous screen adaptations, including the 1975 TV film The Legend of Lizzie Borden, Lifetime’s 2014 Lizzie Borden Took an Ax, and 2018’s Lizzie, starring Chloë Sevigny and Kristen Stewart.

Hunnam, who starred in season three, will portray Andrew Borden in the upcoming season. Additional cast members include Vicky Krieps (‘Phantom Thread,’ ‘Corsage’) as Bridget Sullivan, Rebecca Hall (‘Christine,’ ‘The Town’) as Abby Borden, Billie Lourd (‘American Horror Story,’ ‘The Last Showgirl’) as Emma Borden, and Jessica Barden (‘The End of the F**ing World*,’ ‘Dune: Prophecy’) as Nance O’Neill.

Max Winkler, who previously directed episodes of ‘Monster: The Ed Gein Story,’ will helm the season’s first episode. Further casting and production details are expected to be announced in the coming months.

‘Monster: The Ed Gein Story’ premiered on October 3 and quickly became a breakout hit, amassing 12.2 million views globally in its first three days. The season explored the crimes of Ed Gein, a murderer known for exhuming graves, killing women, and wearing their skin and faces. The series follows earlier installments on Jeffrey Dahmer and brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez, all of which have prompted discussions about the portrayal of real-life crimes in entertainment.
