Pamela Anderson and Debbie Harry are teaming up for a new family comedy film called ‘Maitreya.’
The movie comes from screenwriter Samuel D. Hunter, writer of ‘The Whale,’ and will be directed by Jonathan Krisel, best known for his work on ‘Portlandia’ and ‘Baskets.’
Anderson will play Maitreya, a rising name in the New Age healing world. She is on the verge of flying to a conference in India when she gets a call from her estranged sister, Monica, with serious news: their father is dying.
But instead of staying home, Maitreya comes up with a very Maitreya solution — she brings the whole family with her to India. That includes her mother Barbara, played by Blondie legend Debbie Harry. Once there, Maitreya tries to put her healing beliefs to the ultimate test, while quietly using the family chaos as a catalyst for her next book.
Harry, of course, is best known as the iconic frontwoman of Blondie, but she has long had a parallel life on screen. She made a memorable appearance in David Cronenberg’s 1983 body-horror classic ‘Videodrome,’ starred in John Waters’ ‘Hairspray,’ and has also appeared in ‘Cop Land,’ ‘Union City’ and ‘Forever, Lulu.’
She has also had thoughts about who should play her in a biopic. Last year, Harry said Florence Pugh would be her dream casting, saying it would put her “in heaven”. Kirsten Dunst was reportedly lined up to play her back in 2007, but that project never ended up happening.
Anderson, meanwhile, is in the middle of one of the most interesting second acts in Hollywood. She earned major praise for her performance in the 2024 indie drama ‘The Last Showgirl,’ then followed it with a hit turn opposite Liam Neeson in last year’s remake of ‘The Naked Gun.’
