The long-running search for the next James Bond may finally be approaching its conclusion, with producer Amy Pascal suggesting that the actor succeeding Daniel Craig could be announced before the end of the year.

Speaking while promoting Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which she also produced, Pascal said that “the end of the year is a good bet” for the official casting announcement. However, she stressed that the creative team is proceeding carefully as it attempts to begin a new era for one of cinema’s most recognisable characters.

Pascal acknowledged that Craig will be difficult to follow after spending 15 years as the British secret agent. His run began with 2006’s ‘Casino Royale’ and concluded with ‘No Time to Die’ in 2021, which brought his version of Bond’s story to a definitive end.

Rather than simply repeating what worked during Craig’s tenure, Pascal indicated that the next interpretation must feel fresh, exciting and noticeably different. The comments suggest that Amazon MGM Studios is not only searching for a new leading man but also attempting to establish a distinct identity for the franchise’s next chapter.

Casting is reportedly entering its final stages, with director Denis Villeneuve and producers Pascal and David Heyman said to be preparing for another round of auditions. No actor has officially been confirmed, despite years of speculation surrounding some of the industry’s most prominent young stars.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson has regularly been linked with the part, while Callum Turner, Jacob Elordi, Jack Lowden, Louis Partridge and Tom Francis have also emerged as possible candidates. Nevertheless, the Bond franchise has historically been unpredictable when choosing its leading actors, and the eventual selection may be someone who has not dominated the public conversation.

There has also been speculation that Amazon MGM could favour a relatively lesser-known actor in his late twenties. Casting someone who has not already become closely associated with another major franchise would give the studio an opportunity to shape a new star around the role and potentially retain him across several films.

The upcoming movie, currently referred to as Bond 26, will mark the first instalment developed under Amazon MGM’s expanded creative control of the property. The studio assumed control from longtime Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, whose family had overseen the franchise for decades.

Villeneuve, best known for directing ‘Arrival,’ ‘Blade Runner 2049’ and the ‘Dune’ films, is set to direct the new instalment. His involvement has already raised expectations that the next Bond movie could bring a grander visual scale and a more atmospheric approach to the espionage series.

The screenplay is being written by ‘Peaky Blinders’ creator Steven Knight. Production is currently expected to begin in 2027, with the film reportedly targeting a 2028 theatrical release.
