Paramount’s ‘Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol’ has added Rupert Grint, Sam Claflin, Charlie Murphy, Daisy Ridley, Arthur Conti and Ellie Bamber to its growing cast, joining Johnny Depp, who takes on the iconic role of Ebenezer Scrooge. Andrea Riseborough, Ian McKellen and Tramell Tillman also on board. The film is being directed by Ti West.
The studio has locked in a November 13, 2026 release date.
The script comes from Nathaniel Halpern, with Emma Watts producing, and the project promises a darker, moodier spin on Charles Dickens’ endlessly adapted holiday classic. You know the story—an aging miser, a few well-timed ghosts, and a crash course in empathy courtesy of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come—but West’s version is leaning hard into its ghost-story roots.
And yes, ‘A Christmas Carol’ is officially having a moment. This marks the second big-screen take announced this year, following Warner Bros.’ reveal of a Robert Eggers–directed adaptation with Willem Dafoe circling the role of Scrooge. Apparently, there’s room for more than one haunted holiday miser.
Depp’s Scrooge is set to wander through Dickens-era London on a supernatural journey that forces him to confront who he was, who he is, and who he’s about to become—all while fighting for a second chance at redemption. Character details are still under wraps, but sources say Rupert Grint is likely stepping into the role of Bob Cratchit, Scrooge’s long-suffering yet endlessly kind employee. The rest of the cast’s roles remain a festive mystery for now.
Stephen Deuters and Jason Forman are executive producing, alongside Adam Bohling and David Reid.
More details to come.
