Marvel Studios has officially confirmed that Steve Rogers is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a surprising new chapter in his life.
The first teaser trailer for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ reveals that the star-spangled Avenger, once again portrayed by Chris Evans, will appear in the next major Marvel team-up film, set for release on Dec. 18, 2026. The biggest twist? Captain America is a father.
Marvel has begun its yearlong buildup to ‘Doomsday’ with a Cap-centered teaser currently attached to theatrical screenings of ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash.’ Additional character-focused teasers are expected to roll out in the coming weeks.
The brief teaser opens on a quiet farm, far removed from cosmic battles and collapsing timelines. Steve rides a motorcycle up to his home as a soft piano version of the classic Avengers theme plays. He removes a blue helmet reminiscent of his Captain America uniform and pauses to look at his iconic suit, seemingly lost in reflection. The moment turns deeply personal when Steve is shown holding a newborn baby, pride and peace written across his face.
Audiences last saw Steve Rogers in 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ After defeating Thanos and restoring balance to the universe, Steve volunteered to return the Infinity Stones to their proper places in time. Instead of coming back immediately, he chose to stay in the past, growing old alongside the love of his life, Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). When he finally reappeared in the present, an elderly Steve passed his red-and-white Vibranium shield to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), officially naming him the new Captain America.
Peggy, who spent decades believing Steve was lost after he was frozen in ice during World War II, never stopped loving him. Thanks to time-travel technology tied to the Quantum Realm, the two were able to reunite, marry and live out a full life together across the decades.
The new teaser raises major questions for the MCU. Has Steve returned to the main timeline to rejoin the Avengers? Is this the same Steve Rogers from ‘Endgame,’ or a multiversal variant? And what will his baby’s purpose be?
Evans’ made a surprise and comedic cameo in 2024’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ reprising his original Marvel role as the Human Torch from Fox’s Fantastic Four films.
Evans won’t be the only original Avenger returning for ‘Doomsday.’ Robert Downey Jr. is also back—not as Iron Man, but as the iconic Marvel villain Doctor Doom. The multiverse-spanning event will also feature returning heroes played by Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez, Sebastian Stan, Paul Rudd, Tom Hiddleston, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Hannah John-Kamen and Lewis Pullman.
But these casting decisions (and bringing old characters back) has some fans concerned about the direction of the MCU. See the reaction below:
