‘28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’ is opening behind expectations as the only new wide release over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, where ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ repeats its first place position.

Sony’s ‘The Bone Temple’ is tracking $15 million for the four-day frame and $13 million over three days, well below the $30 million three-day debut of the original 28 Years last June and under the $20 million four-day projection heading into the weekend.

In its fifth weekend, ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ is expected to lead with $17 million over four days. The sequel has grossed $353.4 million domestically and more than $1.23 billion worldwide.

The ‘28 Years Later’ franchise comes from director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland, who brought the series to Sony after a bidding war. ‘The Bone Temple,’ the second film in a planned trilogy, is directed by Nia DaCosta. Sony confirmed last month that a third installment is in development with Cillian Murphy returning and Boyle set to direct, though it remains unclear whether this opening will affect those plans.

Sony is banking on strong word of mouth. ‘The Bone Temple’ holds a 94 percent Rotten Tomatoes score, an A- CinemaScore, and a 4.5 PostTrak rating. The cast includes Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams, Erin Kellyman, and Chi Lewis-Parry.

Elsewhere, Disney Animation’s ‘Zootopia 2’ has become the highest-grossing animated film of all time globally, topping ‘Inside Out 2,’ and now surpassing $1.7 billion worldwide.

Lionsgate’s ‘The Housemaid’ is pacing for $10.1 million in its fifth weekend, down just 22 percent, pushing its domestic total to $108.7 million.

Josh Safdie’s ‘Marty Supreme’ sits at No. 5, eyeing $6.9 million over four days and an $80 million domestic total, following steady overperformance since its Christmas release and renewed attention after Timothée Chalamet’s Golden Globe win.

Rounding out the weekend, Chloé Zhao’s ‘Hamnet’ expands after its Best Drama win at the Golden Globes and Jesse Buckley’s acting victory. Now in 718 theaters, the film is expected to gross $1.6 million over four days, bringing its domestic total to $15 million, with further expansion planned after Oscar nominations.
