Hideo Kojima’s ‘Death Stranding’ franchise is set for another major expansion, with a new animated series in development for Disney+.

The project, titled ‘Death Stranding Isolations’ (working title), was announced by Kojima during Disney’s Asia Pacific Originals content showcase in Hong Kong, where the game creator made an unadvertised appearance. The series is expected to debut on Disney+ in 2027.

First released in 2019 by Kojima Productions, ‘Death Stranding’ became both a commercial hit and a critical touchstone, celebrated for its ambitious worldbuilding and cinematic scope. The original game featured a high-profile cast, including Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Margaret Qualley, Troy Baker, Tommie Earl Jenkins and Lindsay Wagner. The franchise continued to grow this year with the June launch of ‘Death Stranding 2: On the Beach’ for PlayStation 5, and a live-action feature film adaptation is also underway at A24.

Kojima will serve as executive producer on the animated series. He appeared on stage alongside director Takayuki Sano (‘Bullet/Bullet,’ ‘Gridman Universe’) to share early details about the production. The presentation also included newly unveiled concept art by Ilya Kuvshinov, known for his character design work on ‘Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045.’

Speaking through a translator, Kojima said the series would be “pretty mind-blowing” and emphasized that animation offers creative opportunities that differ from both live-action and game development. He confirmed the show will introduce an entirely new set of characters.

Kojima said he was partly motivated to create the animated series to reach audiences who may not play video games but could still engage with the world of ‘Death Stranding’ through another medium.

The series will employ traditional hand-drawn 2D animation, with production handled by E&H Production (‘Ninja Kamui,’ ‘Red Cat Ramen’), one of Japan’s leading animation studios.

Disney+ provided a brief synopsis, noting that ‘Death Stranding Isolations’ will tell a new story set within the game’s universe but distinct from the existing titles, following a young man and woman as they embark on an adventure.
