Prime Video’s upcoming adaptation of the hit video game ‘God of War’ has secured another major creative force. Emmy-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye (‘Shōgun,’ ‘The Boys’) has been enlisted to helm the first two episodes of the action-adventure series, produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios. Toye joins Ronald D. Moore, who is serving as showrunner, writer, and executive producer.

Pre-production has already begun in Vancouver, and casting is officially underway. ‘God of War,’ which has been granted a two-season order, was originally greenlit by Prime Video in December 2022. The project accelerated significantly after Moore came on board last fall and led a major creative revamp.

Prime Video quietly expanded the order to two seasons earlier this year—a move that’s common for large-scale productions with substantial world-building demands. By committing to multiple seasons upfront, the platform can spread the considerable costs of production design, sets, costumes, and props across a longer run.

Adapted from PlayStation’s hugely popular mythology-driven franchise, the series centers on Kratos and his son Atreus—two roles currently being cast—as they embark on a journey to fulfill Faye’s final wish and scatter her ashes. Along the way, Kratos attempts to teach Atreus how to become a better god, while Atreus works to help his father understand how to be a better human.

The series is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in partnership with PlayStation Productions and Moore’s Tall Ship Productions, operating under his overall deal with Sony TV.

Additional executive producers include Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Serving as co-executive producers are Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, Ben McGinnis, and Jeff Ketcham.

Toye brings extensive experience, having directed more than 130 hours of television. His work on FX’s acclaimed ‘Shōgun’ included four episodes, and he won an Emmy for Directing for a Drama Series for the episode “Crimson Sky.”

A frequent collaborator with Prime Video, Toye has directed multiple episodes of ‘Fallout’—where he also serves as an executive producer—as well as ‘The Boys’ and ‘The Terminal List.’ He recently wrapped directing the opening episodes of the streamer’s forthcoming series ‘Terminal List: Dark Wolf’ and ‘Bloodaxe.’
