Paramount is gearing up for a major year at the box office in 2028, planting flags for new ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ and ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ films.
The studio has set an untitled ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ movie for Nov. 17, 2028, followed by an untitled ‘Sonic Universe Event Film’ on Dec. 22, 2028.
Paramount also announced it will rerelease ‘Top Gun’ on May 13, 2026, to mark the film’s 40th anniversary.
Details on both the ‘TMNT’ and ‘Sonic’ projects are being kept under wraps. Producer Neal H. Moritz—best known for shepherding the hit ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ trilogy—is attached to the new ‘Ninja Turtles’ installment as well.
The upcoming ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ film is described as a family-oriented hybrid that blends live action with CG animation. It will reintroduce Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo in the franchise’s first live-action outing since 2016’s ‘Out of the Shadows,’ which underperformed at the box office. More recently, Paramount pivoted to animation with 2023’s ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,’ penned by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. A follow-up, ‘Mutant Mayhem 2,’ is dated for Sept. 17, 2027.
Paramount’s new ‘Sonic’ entry, based on Sega’s long-running game series, is separate from ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 4,’ slated for release on March 19, 2027. The franchise has become one of the studio’s most reliable performers, with the first three installments generating more than $1 billion worldwide.
