Guy Ritchie has officially signed on to direct ‘Road House 2,’ the follow-up to Amazon MGM Studios’ successful action film starring Jake Gyllenhaal.
The script will be penned by Will Beall, known for his work on high-energy films like ‘Aquaman’ and ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ — with story creds including ‘Zack Snyder's Justice League.’
Jake Gyllenhaal is set to return as Dalton, the former UFC fighter who finds work as a bouncer in a bar located in the Florida Keys. Gyllenhaal will also produce the sequel alongside Josh McLaughlin through their Nine Stories Productions label, with Charles Roven and Alex Gartner of Atlas Entertainment also on board.
The plot is currently under wraps.
The 2024 reboot of the 1989 ‘Road House’ classic, was directed by Doug Liman and written by Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry. It became a major success for Prime Video, pulling in nearly 80 million viewers globally within just eight weeks of release.
Doug Liman is not expected to return for the sequel due to a dispute with Amazon over the film’s release strategy. Liman argued the movie deserved a theatrical run, while Amazon claimed he had agreed to a streaming release in exchange for a higher production budget.
Ritchie is seen as a strong fit to take over, especially given his previous collaboration with Gyllenhaal on Amazon MGM’s Guy Ritchie’s ‘The Covenant,’ a critically praised war drama set in Afghanistan. Ritchie is expected to bring a high-octane, high-energy flair to the franchise.
Over the past few years, Ritchie has maintained a rapid pace for the release of this films, including; ‘Wrath of Man’ (2021), ‘Operation Fortune’ and ‘The Covenant’ (2023), ‘The Gentlemen’ series on Netflix and ‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare’ — which starred Henry Cavill (2024).
Ritchie currently has two films in postproduction: ‘Wife and Dog’ and ‘In the Grey.’ A third project, ‘Fountain of Youth’ (starring John Krasinski and Natalie Portman), is slated for release later this year on Apple. He’s also directing and executive producing ‘Young Sherlock,’ an upcoming Prime Video series.
