Jon Watts is heading back to a galaxy far, far away, this time on the big screen.

The filmmaker behind Tom Holland’s first three 'Spider-Man' movies is attached to direct the first instalment of a new 'Star Wars' trilogy being written by Simon Kinberg. The project is currently in development at Lucasfilm and is expected to serve as the next chapter of the Skywalker Saga following 2019’s 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker'.

If the film moves forward as planned, it would effectively become 'Episode X', continuing the nine-film saga that began with the original 'Star Wars' and most recently followed Rey Skywalker, played by Daisy Ridley. Ridley is reportedly expected to appear in some capacity across the new trilogy.

Watts is already familiar with the franchise, having co-created the Disney+ series 'Star Wars: Skeleton Crew' and directed two of its episodes. Outside the galaxy far, far away, he is best known for directing 'Spider-Man: Homecoming', 'Spider-Man: Far From Home' and 'Spider-Man: No Way Home'.

Kinberg, meanwhile, has been developing the mystery trilogy since late 2024. While the project appears to be among Lucasfilm’s more advanced upcoming theatrical plans, Disney has not yet officially greenlit the film, and no release date has been announced.

Before Watts’ film potentially arrives, Lucasfilm will release Shawn Levy’s 'Star Wars: Starfighter', starring Ryan Gosling, which is currently in post-production and scheduled to hit theatres on May 27, 2027.

Watts’ involvement marks another major step toward defining what comes next for 'Star Wars' on the big screen, potentially bringing the Skywalker Saga into a new era after the conclusion of its original nine episodes.
